We’ve made a promise to our teachers, police and firefighters, and other public employees that they’ll be able to retire with dignity and without fear of financial ruin. They kept their end of the bargain, but our legislators have failed to keep theirs. The mess didn’t happen overnight. It’s taken years for funding to slip from 100% in 2000 to the worst-funded retirement system in the nation.
As your senator, I will support the pension promises made to our half-million-plus teachers, first responders, public safety personnel, social workers and city and county employees. Our public servants work each day to keep our communities safe, educate tomorrow’s leaders, or put themselves in harm’s way. The least we can do is protect the promised pension benefits they’ve accrued over years of service.
